What is AI SEO? How to show up in AI assistant answers

What is AI SEO (LLM SEO) and how does it differ from classic SEO? What to do to get listed in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews answers.

Short answer

AI SEO is the work of getting a brand mentioned with accurate information, and cited as a source, in the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI summaries. It covers a crawlable site, content that answers questions directly, consistent brand information and being mentioned on other sites, all together.

What does AI SEO mean?

The concept goes by several names in the industry: AI SEO, LLM SEO, AI search optimisation or simply getting listed in AI answers. They all share one goal: when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot or Google's AI summaries a question, your brand is mentioned in the answer with accurate information and, where possible, shown as a source.

Specialists usually split the work into three areas. GEO (generative engine optimisation) focuses on the answers of chat assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini. AEO (answer engine optimisation) focuses on featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes and voice assistants. AIO covers Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. We explain the differences in our comparison of SEO, AEO, GEO, AIO and GEM and go deeper into GEO in what is GEO.

How is AI SEO different from classic SEO?

In classic SEO the aim is to rank for a search query, and success is measured in position, impressions and clicks. AI assistants have no ranked list of results. The model writes a new text from information gathered from several sources; your brand either appears in that text or it does not. The competition is not about being first, it is about being one of the sources the answer relies on.

That does not make classic SEO less important. Many AI tools that search the live web pull pages from a search index while building their answer. A site that is missing from the Google or Bing index, cannot be crawled or loads slowly is unlikely to be a source in those answers. AI SEO is an extra layer built on top of a solid SEO foundation.

What should you do to show up in AI answers?

The steps below cover the groundwork a brand needs to become visible in AI assistants. None of them is enough on its own; they work when applied together.

Is your site open to AI crawlers?

Make sure your robots.txt file, firewall or content delivery network is not unintentionally blocking crawlers such as GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Bingbot. Important content should also be rendered on the server, meaning it appears in the page source; some crawlers cannot read text that only loads through scripts running in the browser.

Are you in the Google and Bing indexes?

Set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and check that your key pages are indexed. Using the IndexNow protocol lets new or updated pages reach Bing and Yandex quickly. Because the search features of ChatGPT and Copilot draw heavily on Bing infrastructure, Bing should not be neglected.

Does your content answer the question directly?

AI assistants most often quote pages that give a clear, short answer to the question in the first paragraph and then go into detail. Put a self-contained answer block of forty to sixty words at the top of every important page. Write definitions plainly, in the form "X is …", turn subheadings into the questions people actually ask and add frequently asked questions to the page.

Is your brand information consistent everywhere?

Company name, address, phone number, founding year and service description should be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and industry directories. Marking up your organisation details with structured data on your site, and listing your official profiles in that markup, helps models recognise your brand as a single, clear entity.

Are you mentioned on other sites?

AI models learn about brands largely from what other sites write about them. That is why opening profiles in industry directories, asking clients for genuine reviews, contributing expert commentary to industry publications and approaching the authors of "best … agencies" lists with your evidence all matter. Bought links and fake reviews break platform policies and damage the brand.

Do you offer original information?

Rewriting information that already exists elsewhere gives a model no reason to cite you. Process descriptions based on your own experience, checklists specific to your industry, transparent pricing models and research you carried out yourself make citation more likely. Keeping content current and showing the date it was updated also matters.

Do you have an llms.txt file?

llms.txt is a text file that gives AI assistants a short map of your site. The major providers have not officially committed to reading it, so it should not be treated as a ranking factor. It is, however, easy to add and summarises your site structure. You can find the details in what is llms.txt.

How is AI SEO measured?

With no ranking report, measurement relies on a set of questions. List the questions customers in your sector ask, such as "Which agency in Istanbul offers GEO services?" or "Which channels should I use to find patients abroad?". Ask these questions in different assistants at regular intervals and record each time whether your brand is mentioned, in what context, which sources are shown and how competitors fare.

Alongside that, track visits from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com as a separate channel in Google Analytics. Changes in impressions for informational queries in Search Console also give a hint of the impact of AI summaries.

What does an AI SEO agency do?

An AI SEO agency, or GEO agency, runs all of this work under a single plan:

  • A technical audit of the site for AI crawlers and search indexes.
  • Building a sector-specific question set and measuring visibility regularly.
  • Restructuring key pages around direct answers, definitions and frequently asked questions.
  • Making organisation details, structured data and directory listings consistent.
  • A policy-compliant plan for mentions in directories, industry publications and review platforms.
  • A shared measurement framework with classic SEO, content and advertising work.

We explain what to look for when choosing an agency in how to choose a GEO agency and describe our own approach on our GEO service page. If you would like to talk about how your brand appears in AI answers today, you can reach us through our contact page.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

  • Trusting guarantees: No agency can control which brands a model mentions in its answers.
  • Blocking AI bots without noticing: Security settings sometimes shut out every crawler; check them regularly.
  • Unsupervised mass content: Producing many low-quality pages in a short time conflicts with search engines' spam policies and erodes brand trust.
  • Treating a single file as the solution: Adding llms.txt or structured data is only a small part of the work.
  • Dropping classic SEO: A large share of AI answers is fed by search indexes; if the SEO foundation is weak, AI visibility stays weak too.

Frequently asked

Is AI SEO the same as GEO?
In practice, largely yes. AI SEO is usually used as an umbrella term covering GEO, AEO and Google AI Overviews work. GEO is the technical name for the part of the field that focuses on chat assistants.
Do you have to pay to be listed in ChatGPT?
A place in organic answers cannot be bought; providers such as OpenAI state that ads do not influence organic answers. Some AI products are opening separate ad placements, but these are independent of organic visibility and are labelled as ads.
How long does AI SEO take to show results?
No exact timeframe can be given. Tools that search the live web can reflect changes faster, while what a model knows from training is updated with new versions. Seeing a meaningful trend takes several months of regular measurement.
Should a small business invest in AI SEO?
For a small business serving a local area, Google Business Profile, local SEO and consistent business information come first, and they also feed AI answers. For services with a long, research-heavy decision process, the impact of AI SEO is more pronounced.
