A guide to digital marketing for franchise brands

How do you set up digital marketing for a franchise brand? Brand versus branch marketing, local SEO per branch, investor campaigns and governance.

Short answer

Digital marketing for franchise brands brings head office's brand communication and the branches' local marketing together under one framework of rules and data. Head office manages brand identity, shared campaigns and measurement; each branch becomes visible in its area through local SEO, a business profile and local ads. Investor acquisition runs as a separate channel.

Why is franchise marketing a discipline of its own?

Franchise marketing is the marketing model that makes many branches carrying the same brand, but run by different operators, look like a single brand while also helping each of them win customers in its own area. In a single-location business, the person who decides and the person who executes are the same. In a franchise system, there are at least three parties: head office, which owns the brand; the franchisee, who runs the branch; and the consumer, who is the customer of both.

This structure raises marketing questions of its own: who will manage the advertising budget? Can a branch launch its own campaign? Who owns the business profiles on Google? Who replies to a negative review, and in what tone? If these questions are not answered from the start, the result is an inconsistent brand presence, campaigns competing with each other and a budget that cannot be measured.

How do you separate brand marketing from branch marketing?

In healthy franchise marketing, responsibilities are split into two layers. Head office takes on the work that concerns the brand as a whole; branches have a say in work that requires being close to local customers. Where the line is drawn varies by sector and by how mature the system is, but a general framework looks like this:

AreaHead office's roleBranch's role
Brand identity and messagingSets it, writes the guidelines, approvesApplies it in line with the guidelines
WebsiteBuilds and manages it, provides the branch page templateReports changes to branch information
Business profilesHolds account ownership, sets standardsHandles photos, opening hours and day-to-day updates
National campaignsPlans, runs and measures themImplements them in store
Local campaignsProvides templates and budget rulesAdapts them to its area and proposes ideas
Customer reviewsSets the reply policy and toneReplies to reviews of its own branch within the policy

Putting this table in writing into the franchise agreement and the operations manual prevents disputes later on.

How should the advertising fund be managed?

In many franchise systems, branches contribute to a shared advertising fund. What the fund is spent on, how it is reported to branches and how much is set aside for local campaigns should be shown transparently in the agreement and in regular reports. Franchisees being unable to see where the fund goes is one of the fastest ways to erode trust within the system.

How do you do local SEO for each branch?

For franchise brands, most customers arrive through "near me" searches or searches containing a neighbourhood name. Appearing in these searches depends on each branch having a strong local presence of its own.

  • A separate page for each branch: Each branch should have its own page on the website: address, map, opening hours, phone number, branch-specific photos and information specific to that area. Copy pages where only the city name changes stay weak.
  • A verified business profile for each branch: Map and directory listings, starting with Google Business Profile, should be opened separately for each branch; account ownership should stay with head office, and branch managers should be given manager access.
  • Consistent business information: Branch name, address and phone number should be written exactly the same on the site, on profiles and in directories. Branches that close or move should be updated promptly.
  • Review management: Replying to reviews regularly and within the policy supports both local visibility and customer trust.
  • Structured data: Marking up each branch page's business information with structured data helps search engines understand branches as separate locations.

We explain the details of this work on our local SEO service page.

How should local advertising campaigns be set up?

Branches launching ads on their own can lead to the same brand bidding against itself in the same search, inconsistent messages and spending that cannot be measured. A healthier model is one where ad accounts are managed centrally but campaigns are split by branch area:

  1. Head office prepares a library of approved creative and message templates.
  2. Location-targeted campaigns are set up for each branch; templates are adapted for situations such as a branch opening, a local event or seasonal demand.
  3. Budget rules are set in advance: campaigns funded by head office and campaigns a branch supports from its own budget are reported separately.
  4. Conversions are measured per branch: directions, calls, reservations, orders or forms.

We explain how search, social and map advertising are managed within one performance framework in our performance marketing service.

How should head office and branch social media accounts be managed?

There are two common models. In the first, there is only a head office account, and branch content is shared from it. In the second, each branch has its own account. The second model can increase local engagement, but it is sustainable only with clear rules: what content may be shared, visual standards, the approval process for campaign and price announcements, and who speaks in a crisis. Without rules, accounts gradually drift away from the brand. Whichever model is chosen, account logins and admin rights should be registered with head office, and what happens to an account when a branch changes hands or closes should be decided in advance.

How do you find franchise investors?

Franchise marketing is not aimed only at end consumers. For brands that want to open new branches, investor acquisition is a separate marketing channel and works very differently from consumer campaigns.

  • A separate audience: Prospective investors look for answers on the business model, investment requirements, support structure and territory fit. This calls for a separate franchise page or microsite that answers these questions.
  • A long decision process: An investment decision takes weeks, often months. Rather than a single ad, you need a process that moves forward through guide content, information meetings and regular communication.
  • Pre-qualification: The application form should include questions to understand the candidate's area, sector experience and investment readiness; the sales team's time should go to qualified candidates.
  • Channel choice: Search ads capture people researching franchises, while professional networks and social media ads reach audiences interested in entrepreneurship. Industry events and publications support digital campaigns.
  • Realistic language: Messages promising earnings or a payback period damage trust and carry legal risk. The model, the support and the requirements should be explained clearly.

Our lead generation service covers collecting candidates, qualifying them and handing them over to the sales team. In this process, the channel each candidate came from and the stage they are at should be kept on record, and candidates who attend an information meeting and those who reach the contract stage should be tracked separately.

How should measurement be set up in franchise marketing?

Head office needs to see all branches on a single dashboard, and branches need to be able to track their own performance. Search visibility per branch, business profile interactions, ad spend and conversions, review rating and review reply time are the core indicators. When comparing branches, differences such as local population, competition and the branch's age should be taken into account; otherwise the conclusions will be wrong.

How does the digital process work when a new branch opens?

A repeatable checklist for each new branch keeps the opening smooth online as well: publishing the branch page on the website, opening and verifying the business profile, directory listings, a location-targeted opening campaign, a social media announcement and training for the branch manager. For restaurant and café chains, listings on menu, reservation and delivery platforms are added to this list. We describe our approach to this sector on our restaurants and cafés page.

Frequently asked

Can a franchisee run their own ads?
That depends on the franchise agreement and the brand's marketing policy. Even where it is allowed, compliance with brand guidelines, the approval process, targeting limits and reporting rules should be set in advance. Otherwise branches of the same brand can end up competing with each other in the same search.
Who should own the Google Business Profiles?
It is generally recommended that account ownership stays with head office and branch managers are given manager access. That way, when a branch changes hands or the franchise relationship ends, the profile and its accumulated reviews stay with the brand.
Does each branch need its own website?
In most cases, no. Opening a separate, content-rich page for each branch within a single brand website is healthier for both ease of management and search visibility. Separate sites split brand authority and make consistency harder.
Should franchise investor campaigns and consumer campaigns be run from the same budget?
Running them separately is recommended. The two channels differ in audience, message, decision time and measurement indicators. When they are combined in one budget, it becomes hard to see which one is delivering results.
