Bing now shows the topics where AI answers skip your site

Bing Webmaster Tools' Topics Portfolio beta lists AI queries where rivals are cited and your site is not. Here is what companies should do with it.

Short answer

Microsoft has added a beta view called Topics Portfolio to the AI report in Bing Webmaster Tools. It groups the topics where your site is cited in AI answers and lists queries where competitors are cited and you are not. The figures are estimated ranges, so treat them as a starting point for finding content gaps.

Highlights

  • Topics Portfolio sits in a new tab beside Citations & Pages in the AI Performance report.
  • Each topic shows its size, the number of sites cited and the number of queries.
  • Bing asks that the numbers be read as directional signals for planning, not as a precise ledger.

Microsoft has added a beta feature called Topics Portfolio to the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. It sorts the queries your site is cited for in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries into broader topics. According to Search Engine Journal, the view only appears when Bing has enough data on your site, so smaller sites may see few items or none.

What does Topics Portfolio show?

The report lists topics where your site has a "meaningful" presence and gives three measures for each: topic size (the estimated total citations across all sites), sites cited and the number of different queries. Below it, Top Opportunity Queries collects queries where other sites are cited and yours is not. You can view the data over a one-, two- or three-month window.

How does it differ from the June release?

The Topics labels added in June only grouped queries where your site was already cited. The new view adds topic-level totals across all sites and the queries where you are not cited. Bing has not published a help page for the new report or given a date for leaving beta.

How far can you trust the data?

Topics are generated by AI, so a query may land under a different label from the one you would choose. Branded searches can also show up as opportunities; in Microsoft's example, a shoe site saw a competitor's brand search listed. Microsoft's advice: "Treat the numbers as directional signals for planning, not as a precise ledger."

What should companies do?

The source says nothing about Turkish-language queries, so it is unclear how much data the feature will produce for Turkish content. If you have an account, these steps still make sense:

  • Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and check access now, since the report only appears with enough data.
  • Group the opportunity queries by topic and decide which page should answer each; if no page exists, add it to the content plan.
  • Filter out competitor-brand and irrelevant queries and flag them to Bing with the feedback buttons.
  • Compare results month by month; because figures come as ranges, watch the direction of change rather than exact citation counts.

Frequently asked

Is Topics Portfolio available to everyone?
It is offered as a beta and only appears when Bing has enough data on your site. Smaller sites may never see it.
