Google Ads widens its customer lifecycle modes

Google Ads brings high value acquisition to Shopping and opens re-engagement and loyalty modes to Search. What should advertisers do?

Short answer

Google Ads is bringing its high value acquisition mode to Shopping campaigns and rolling out re-engagement, loyalty and retention-only modes across Search, Shopping and Performance Max. Advertisers teach Google which customers deserve higher bids through their own customer lists, so the outcome depends on how those lists are built.

Highlights

  • High value acquisition arrives in Shopping after Search and Performance Max.
  • Re-engagement, loyalty and retention-only modes are rolling out across Performance Max, Search and Shopping.
  • Setup sits in the Customer Lifecycle Optimization section under Goals in Google Ads.

As Search Engine Journal reports, Google Ads is opening its customer lifecycle settings to more campaign types. The update rolls out in October, and the retention modes reach a wider audience after beta testing.

Which new modes is Google Ads adding?

High value acquisition mode is coming to Shopping campaigns. The setting lets advertisers bid higher for new customers who resemble their most valuable existing buyers. Google's documentation specifies value-based bidding and requires at least one Purchase conversion goal.

Three retention modes become available across Performance Max, Search and Shopping: re-engagement (prioritises lapsed customers), loyalty (reaches loyalty programme members with tailored messaging and offers) and retention-only (limits a campaign to the existing customer segments the advertiser specifies).

Why does defining a lapsed customer matter?

According to the source, advertisers define when a customer counts as lapsed based on their own purchase cycle, identify them with Customer Match lists and assign additional conversion value so Smart Bidding prioritises them. For coffee, 90 days may be a long gap; for a refrigerator it is not. A retailer selling both needs more specific lists than a single 90-day rule.

The same logic applies to high value acquisition: using one large, heavily discounted order as the model teaches Google something different from using regular, smaller purchases.

What should e-commerce brands do?

The feature may not have reached your account yet, and the source notes that Google's support page has not fully caught up with the rollout. Check whether the Customer Lifecycle Optimization section appears in your account settings first, then prepare your lists.

  • Build a separate lapsed-customer list for each product category; one day count does not fit every product.
  • Base the high value list on repeat purchases and margin rather than one-off large orders, and set additional conversion value to what the business can afford to pay for that customer.
  • Settle consent and privacy notices for using customer data in advertising with your legal team before uploading Customer Match lists.
  • Compare results with actual sales and margin, including discounts and advertising cost, not only platform reports.

In Google Ads work that manages Shopping and Search accounts on conversion and customer data, these modes can be a practical way to separate the budget for winning new customers from the budget for winning back existing ones.

Frequently asked

When should retention-only mode be chosen?
According to the source, it is the choice when the campaign budget is dedicated to selected existing customer segments. If new customer acquisition is also a goal, re-engagement mode keeps reaching other shoppers.
