Short answer
Ahrefs' research shows that the sources AI tools cite change sharply from one day to the next, yet most citations that disappear return within a short time. A single daily check is therefore misleading; visibility is better tracked over a window of several days with repeated measurements.
Highlights
- Ahrefs followed about 37,500 citations across five AI tools every day for 20 days.
- More than half of citations vanished the next day; about 75% of those that vanished returned during the study.
- Pages that rank in Google and receive search traffic kept their citations for longer.

SEO teams now measure whether their brand is cited as a source in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews answers. Ahrefs' new research exposes the biggest weakness of that measurement: citations are not fixed, they change hands every day.
How quickly do citations disappear?
Ahrefs asked five AI tools the same questions every day for 20 days and tracked about 37,500 citations shown on the first day. More than half of the citations were gone the next day; depending on the tool, the share ranged from 50% to 83%.
The loss is often not permanent, though: about 75% of the citations that disappeared returned within the 20-day study, and about half within three days. For pages that had been cited for 8 days or more, the return rate after a drop was between 96% and 99%. By contrast, between 34% and 41% of citations that appeared for only one day never returned.
Which pages kept their citations longer?
According to Ahrefs, pages that rank in Google and receive organic traffic kept their citations for longer. Domain authority and backlink counts made no clear difference between long-lived and short-lived citations. On Gemini and Copilot, more than half of answers cited no sources at all, so on those tools a "lost citation" often simply means an answer without sources.
What should Turkish companies do?
- Do not base your GEO report on a one-day screenshot; for each question you track, record how many of the last seven days you were cited.
- Do not change a page the moment a citation disappears; Ahrefs shows that most return within days on their own. If the drop lasts two or three weeks, review the page.
- Wait several days before counting a new citation as a lasting win, and do not credit a page edit for a single comeback.
- Keep protecting your Google rankings and organic traffic: SEO work underpins visibility in AI answers too. GEO work manages measurement and page structure together and makes this tracking routine.
Frequently asked
- Should I worry if an AI tool stops citing me?
- A single day's loss is usually not a signal; in Ahrefs' data most lost citations came back. If the loss lasts several weeks, look at the page's search performance and how well it answers the question.
