Shopify lets AI agents complete the checkout step

Shopify now lets browser-based AI agents read the checkout and place orders with the buyer's approval, while retailers such as Amazon block agents.

Short answer

Shopify has announced that AI agents working inside the browser can now complete the checkout step on its stores. Agents can read the checkout screen, update an address or delivery option, and finish the order once the buyer authorises it. While some large retailers block agents, Shopify is moving the other way, giving e-commerce sites a new choice to weigh.

Shopify has announced that browser-based AI agents can now complete purchases on merchants' sites. According to TechCrunch, agents are no longer limited to searching for products and adding them to a cart; they can also carry out the checkout step.

How do agents complete a checkout?

Shopify previously supported WebMCP for storefronts and carts, which let browser-based agents comb through a store's inventory, search for products and add them to a cart. WebMCP is a proposed standard for agents that work inside the buyer's browser. Checkout support, including Shop Pay, means an agent can read and update the checkout screen and submit the transaction with the buyer's authorisation, without relying on screenshots or scraping pages.

Three new tools make this possible: get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout. An agent can inspect a checkout, change details such as the customer's address or delivery option, and place the order after the buyer authorises it. Gil Greenberg, a staff product manager working on agentic commerce at Shopify, said the feature is rolling out to all eligible Shopify merchants.

Why are retailers splitting on agentic commerce?

Some retailers, such as Amazon and Adidas, block agents from making purchases on users' behalf on their platforms. Shopify has chosen the opposite path, using structured tools built on its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). The company says the tools are designed to ensure accurate commerce facts, required disclosures and handoff requirements.

What should e-commerce teams in Turkey do?

For stores on Shopify, the feature may arrive by default, so review which information your checkout flow exposes to agents. It is too early to say how widespread agent-led shopping will become in Turkey. Even so, keeping product data, prices, stock and delivery information structured and consistent pays off whether or not agent traffic grows. Stores with their own infrastructure should make a deliberate decision on whether to block or support agents.
