Short answer
OpenAI has added Intelligent UI to ChatGPT, a feature in which the model chooses the format of each answer. Alongside plain text it can now produce buttons, forms, charts and diagrams, and even build small tools that run inside the reply. That matters most for calculator and converter pages.
Highlights
- Intelligent UI, launched with GPT-6, can present an answer as text, a chart, a form or a tool.
- It starts today for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users and reaches Free and Go on Thursday.
- According to SEJ, simple calculator and converter pages could be challenged by tools generated inside ChatGPT.

OpenAI has changed how ChatGPT answers as it brings GPT-6 to the app: a feature called Intelligent UI can show interactive elements such as buttons, forms, charts and diagrams inside the conversation. Search Engine Journal and The Verge reported the change.
What does Intelligent UI do?
Intelligent UI means the model decides how an answer should look based on the question; when text is the most useful format, ChatGPT still replies in plain text. OpenAI's examples include a diagram of a bicycle's gears with buttons that highlight each part, and visual cards that teach a game.
Users can also ask for small apps to be built inside the chat, such as a calculator showing how savings might grow or a tool that splits a restaurant bill.
Who gets it, and when?
The feature opens today for Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users and reaches Free and Go users on Thursday. The higher plans run on GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go use GPT-6 Luna. The Pro thinking level and the older macOS and Windows desktop apps do not support it. On the web, the "Layout and visuals" setting can be switched off to reduce visuals.
Are answers arriving faster?
According to OpenAI, GPT-6 can start answering while it is still thinking or using tools. For questions that need a web search, GPT-6 Instant starts replying 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. That is OpenAI's own claim, not an independent measurement.
What does it mean for websites and brands?
SEJ's assessment is that two of OpenAI's example tools, the bill splitter and the savings calculator, rely on public maths. The same article says pages for such simple tools could be challenged by tools generated inside the chat. The announcement does not explain how sources will appear in answers shown as charts, comparisons or tools.
- Add brand-specific data, examples and expert commentary to calculator pages, not just a formula.
- Try questions from your sector in ChatGPT and check whether your brand appears as a source.
- Keep pages clear with structured data and plain headings; source display may change along with answer formats.
Frequently asked
- Can Intelligent UI be turned off?
- Yes, the "Layout and visuals" setting can be switched off on the web. According to ChatGPT's help page, some visual elements may still appear.
